L-R: Scholarship Committee member William Wallace, recipient John Cabrera, and John’s mother Olga Chavez.
At our June 4th meeting, Bill Wallace introduced us to John Cabrera, one of the three recipients of the Rotary Club of Frederick/Meredith S. and Helen B. Young Scholarship. A graduate of Frederick High School with a 4.81 GPA, John is a member of the National Honor Society and the National Science Honor Society. He was a member of the Swim Team, All- Academic Team, Student Government, and Class Executive. Bilingual in English and Spanish, John was also a volunteer with the Frederick’s Children’s Chorus. He plans to major in Biological Science at the University of Maryland and hopes to go on to Johns Hopkins Medical School.
We will always be grateful to “Mutt” and Helen Young for their generous bequest which has allowed us to award more than $150,000 in scholarships and post-secondary educational opportunities for area students since the Fund’s founding. Thanks also to Bill Wallace and Ron Burley who carefully and thoroughly reviewed the many applications for this year’s scholarships, and for their thoughtful decision-making. We also appreciate the ongoing efforts of The Community Foundation of Frederick County for managing its resources—including ours—so that nearly $2 million in scholarships could be awarded.
Best of luck to John!
