“Mutt”’s career at Fredericktown Bank and Trust (now PNC Bank) was interrupted while he served in WWII as a Master Sergeant in the 146th Finance Section of the Army, experiencing both the European and Pacific theaters. Meredith returned to the bank following the war, and in 1957, became assistant vice-president. In January 1959, he became the youngest bank president in the City of Frederick, at the age of 46. After her graduation from Hood College in 1935, Helen was also hired by Fredericktown Bank and Trust where she met Mutt. The couple married in 1943. Helen’s bank career lasted 41 years until her retirement in 1978 as vice-president and trust officer.

Through the remarkable generosity of our members, the Rotary Club of Frederick has amassed $1.2 million under management at the Community Foundation of Frederick County, a sum which yields annual proceeds that are reinvested in various ways back into the community.

In 2012, our club received a generous bequest from the estate of longtime member, Meredith Young, or Mutt as he was better known, and his wife, Helen. Knowing of Mutt and Helen’s lifelong support of education, we founded The Rotary Club of Frederick/W. Meredith S. Young and Helen B. Young Scholarship Fund at the Community Foundation to fund post-secondary education.

This year, we were able to award six scholarships from this Fund totaling $25,000 to the following area students:

Henri-Michael Ly graduated from Urbana High School in 2022 and will be attending Princeton University to pursue a degree in Mathematics.

Sam Mitchel graduated from Oakdale High School in 2022 and will be attending the University of Miami to pursue a degree in Business Technology.
