Today, we were joined by two of the three recipients of The Rotary Club of Frederick Scholarship funded by The W. Meredith S. Young and Helen B. Young Fund at The Community Foundation of Frederick County: Anjira DeSouza from WHS who will attend University of Maryland and Dia Jah (TJS) who is bound for Yale University. (A third recipient, Camryn McKay (Gettysburg College) was unable to attend.)
The Young’s Fund is one of six Rotary Club of Frederick funds under management at The Community Foundation, collectively valued at more than $1.2 million. Founded in 2012 with an estate gift from Meredith (or Mutt” as he was known around town, and who was an active member of our club for many years) and Helen Young, its proceeds have been used by our club over the past 11 years to provide $189,000 in post-secondary educational opportunities to local students.
Scores of deserving students are already grateful for the forethought of Mutt and Helen Young. And because their Fund’s principal will never be touched, hundreds more students will benefit from Rotary Club of Frederick Scholarships in the decades to come.
Someone very wise once said “Blessed Are Those Who Plant Trees Under Whose Shade They Will Never Sit.” By that definition, the late Meredith “Mutt” Young and his wife Helen Young are blessed indeed.
Congratulations, Anjira, Dia and Camryn, and best of luck in college and beyond!
