Charles "Chuck" Austin
Secretary Emeritus
With 54 years of perfect attendance and an impeccable record of club service, Charles “Chuck” Austin is a non-voting but invaluable member of the Rotary Club of Frederick’s Board of Directors. Chuck has helped guide the club through many changes and transitions, and is an important source of historical and institutional knowledge upon which dozens of RCF presidents have depended. Born and raised in Baltimore, Chuck moved his family to Frederick in March of 1964 to take a job as plant manager for Corning GlassWorks on Water Street. Several months later, Rotarian Walter Roney’s father, Clyde, and the late Marty Bowers, visited him in his Braddock Heights home to invite him to become a member of the Rotary Club of Frederick. With the full support of his new boss, George Broghy, Chuck was inducted on September 21, 1964. By the third week of his membership, the late Al Cohen appointed him to the Attendance Committee, where he spent many years of his Rotary career, including as Secretary from 1973-1987. Chuck’s service has touched every service lane in the Rotary organization, which he was proud to do alongside dozens of lifelong friends, including Mike Brittain and Ed Hartman.
