Seton Center, Inc. is a social service agency sponsored by the Daughters of Charity of the St. Louise Province. They serve the residents of northern Frederick County, Maryland. Their mission is to work in the spirit of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton with their neighbors to build a more hopeful future through a focus on self-sufficiency and well-being of the whole person.
Their flagship program, Getting Ahead in a Just-Getting’-By World, is a 16-20 week program consisting of three-hour roundtable sessions on a weekly basis. Participants, called Investigators, research the “hidden rules” of economic class, explore their own value and skills, and investigate the realities of poverty in their own lives and in their communities. They develop a long-term plan and direction for their lives, and develop ways for creating the changes they need to accomplish their goals. Graduates of Getting Ahead have gone on to make positive changes in the community and in their own lives, creating improved, sustainable futures for themselves and their families.
