Feeding the Children
For many years, the thousands of Frederick County elementary school students who relied on the federally funded free-and-reduced meals program for breakfast and lunch Monday through Friday went home uncertain if they would have food to eat over the weekend. Sadly, many of these students dealt with empty bellies for as long as 65 hours until they returned to school on Monday morning.
Since 2014, Blessings in a Backpack has been working to change that by providing bags of nutritious, kid-friendly food to children who are at risk of going hungry over the weekends. From modest beginnings at Orchard Grove Elementary School in 2014, the Blessings in a Backpack program has grown to packing 2,200 bags every week during the school year in 16 Frederick County schools
During RY 2017-18, our club donated $10,000 to help provide weekend supplemental nutrition to kids in need. In addition, an enthusiastic group of RCF members volunteers every Wednesday and Friday to help pack these bags at Monocacy and Waverley Elementary Schools. We are currently packing nearly 300 bags every week at Monocacy Elementary, and close to 650 at Waverley.
By joining forces with this great organization and the rest of our generous community, our club is pleased to report that there is no longer a waiting list at Waverley School.
